Retrieving an idea improves later learning more reliably than rereading alone.

A large classroom meta-analysis found a consistent benefit from practice testing, and Read–Recite–Review research found that adding closed-book recitation improved retention without requiring more study time.

Retrieval works better when errors receive explanatory feedback and the corrected idea is retrieved again.

Feedback prevents confident errors from being preserved. Research supports feedback that explains the correction, while recent synthesis finds feedback conditions help determine whether retrieval beats elaboration.

Applying and explaining knowledge can improve transfer beyond repeating the original material.

Retrieval practice shows a modest but robust transfer benefit, and self-explanation has positive effects across many learning settings. That is why the routine ends with one new use, comparison, explanation, or response.

Important knowledge is better retained when later retrieval is spaced over time.

Spacing effects are well established, including for retrieval practice. Learning therefore limits card creation during the session and leaves future scheduling to a spaced-repetition tool instead of adding another immediate task.
